En flicka i den minsta klassen grät av rädsla första gången hon såg oss, annars går man runt med en hand kring varje finger och höjs till skyarna av barnen här.
Har t.ex. föreläst om “Health and Hygiene” i alla klasserna, och varje gång vi demonstrerat hur man ska snyta sig eller hosta i armvecket istället för händerna så har alla skrattat, tittat på varandra, tittat på oss. Frågade en av lärarna om varför (fruktade ju att vi bröt mot någon social regel eller något liknande), förklaringen:

For example, we’ve been teaching all the classes about “Health and Hygiene”, and every time we’ve been demonstrating that instead of using the hands when coughing or sneezing, one should use the inside of the elbow, everyone has been laughing while looking at each other and then looking at us. I asked one of the teachers why that was (what if we disobeyed some social conduct or something like that), the explanation:
”They’re not expecting you to do that. They think it’s an African disease.”
Att mzungos inte hostar eller nyser alltså, i Sydamerika dog befolkningen av förkylningar när vita upptäckte kontinenten av den enkla anledningen att de aldrig haft den sjukdomen tidigare, slår vad om att det var vita som drog med det till Afrika as well.
So mzungos can’t catch a cold huh? In South America the population died from those when the whites discovered the continent just because they never had that illness before, bet the same thing happened in Africa as well.
”Do mzungos die?”
Det är en annan fråga vi fått höra. Ah, de har verkligen för höga tankar om oss.
